Casual Friday
2026

Ink on paper
19 ¾”x 19 ¾” (50.2 cm x 50.2 cm)

The composition is informed by drone footage and satellite imagery of debris fields in London, Kentucky, after being struck by an EF4 tornado on Friday, May 16th,  2025.

Casual Friday is a tradition where businesses and corporations allow their employees to dress more informally for one day. The famous 1856 chess game “The Immortal Game” was also played on a Friday in London, England, and was documented as a “casual” game–meaning it was not played in a tournament.

This drawing has 64 cells, the same number as a chessboard, and is part of a series that explores how debris field forms intersect with the game of chess.

Informed by drone footage of debris fields in London, Kentucky, after being struck by an EF4 tornado in  2025.

Windfall originally referred to fruit knocked out of a tree by wind, and usually refers to an unexpected influx of money. But in this case, it is ironically contrasted with the misfortunate falling of trees and structures caused by severe wind.

Ink on paper
19 ¾”x 19 ¾” (50.2 cm x 50.2 cm)

Informed by drone footage of debris fields in Marion, Illinois, after being struck by an EF4 tornado in  2025.

A supercell is a dangerous type of thunderstorm with persisting twisting updraft that can lead to tornadoes. The coordinate lines in the drawings also form cells that frame arrangements of debris.
